How You Can Support The LGBTQ+ Community & Celebrate Pride Month
Judy Garland sang it best, “somewhere over the rainbow…” It’s no secret, that the universal symbol for Gay Pride and the LGBTQ+ community is the rainbow. As we get deeper into June, we celebrate the LGBTQ+ community as well as stand in solidarity with them. After all, it's Pride Month!
The first major gay pride movement (also known as the first Pride Parade) occurred June 28, 1970, in New York City. Today, this historic occasion is known as Stonewall where gay activist held their first march. Eight years later, the rainbow flag was established as a colorful symbol for the gay community.
Aside from dressing like the rainbow, trust us, we have some colorful shoes, how can you support the LGBTQ+ community now as well as every day?
Decorate and Craft with the Rainbow
To show your support (and Pride spirit) crafting colorful and meaningful crafts to decorate your space not only lends support to the LGBTQ+ community, but it’s so fun! We love this Rainbow Craft Roundup via Martha Stewart Living.
Pride Philanthropy
Another way to support the LGBTQ community is to literally support them, charitably. Whether you are interested in donating your time, voice, or dollars, amazing LGBTQ+ charities are doing extraordinary things. Need some guidance on where to donate too? Cosmopolitan composed a fabulous list, read it here.
Rainbow Bakes
It’s no party unless there is cake, are we right? Basically, post-pandemic, we all emerged professional bakers, so, why not whip up a rainbow cake? In case you are still learning your way around the Kitchen-Aid Mixer, Betty Crocker has an easy Rainbow Layer Cake recipe.
Understanding Love is Love
Lastly, one simple way to support the LGBTQ+ community is to practice acceptance and to be open-minded. Love makes the world go round, it doesn’t matter who you love, love is love.
