The Underrated Summer Vacation Edit

Where to Go and What to Wear

Every summer, there are a handful of destinations that seem to be the place to be. Last summer, it was Tokyo and Madrid. The summer before, Bali and the South of France stole the spotlight. And while it's always fun to experience the destinations everyone is talking about, sometimes the best trips are the ones that take you a little off the beaten path.

If you're craving an adventure this summer but would rather skip the crowds (and the sky-high hotel prices), this list is for you. We rounded up our favorite under-the-radar destinations for a last-minute summer escape, with something for every kind of traveler. Think mountain retreats, crystal-clear coastlines, charming European towns, and tropical islands, all with fewer tourists, more local charm, and often at a fraction of the cost of this season's hottest destinations.

The best part? We paired each destination with the perfect Alterre look, so you'll have one less thing to worry about and one more reason to book that flight.

Cabarete, Dominican Republic

I might be a little biased because I used to live here, but that just means you're getting the local's guide. Whether you're planning a girls' trip, a family vacation, or a solo adventure, Cabarete is one of those places that somehow has it all.

Nestled on the Dominican Republic's stunning North Coast, just 30 minutes from Puerto Plata Airport, Cabarete is a laid-back surf and kitesurf town where everything you could want is within a 20-minute drive. Spend your mornings watching world-class kiteboarders at Kite Beach before heading into downtown Cabarete, where the beach is lined with colorful restaurants, boutique shops, and lively bars. Grab dinner at Mojito's Restaurant, then stroll the beach as the sun goes down.

Just seven minutes west is Playa Encuentro, a small surf community that completely stole my heart. Start your morning with a yoga class, book a surf lesson, then settle into one of the beachfront cafés with a cappuccino while watching the waves roll in. If you're staying in the area, I can't recommend Surfbreak Cabarete enough, and Wavesoul Retreats is my go-to for surf lessons.

Five minutes farther down the coast, you'll reach Sosúa, where the waves give way to calm, crystal-clear water and vibrant coral reefs. Spend the afternoon snorkeling, book a sunset sailing charter, or simply order a piña colada and relax in a beach chair. My local tip? Head to Playa Alicia for one of the best sunsets on the island, then grab cocktails at Waterfront Restaurant overlooking the ocean.

Whether you're dancing bachata at La Bahía, enjoying Wednesday open mic night at La Chabola, or spending the day barefoot on the beach, Cabarete calls for effortless tropical style. I'd pack the Gold Lo Platform + Elsie Strap for evenings out and the Blue Viper Wave Sandal + Marilyn Strap for days hititing the town. They're the perfect match for the colorful, carefree energy of the Dominican Republic's North Coast. Trust me, these shoes were made for this trip.

Milos, Greece

If you've been dreaming of Santorini but not the sky-high prices or shoulder-to-shoulder crowds, let me introduce you to Milos. It has all the whitewashed villages, turquoise water, and postcard-worthy views you'd expect from the Greek Islands, but with a much more relaxed, authentic feel.

No trip to Milos is complete without visiting Sarakiniko Beach, famous for its otherworldly white volcanic rock formations that look like the surface of the moon. Spend the morning swimming in its crystal-clear water before heading out on a catamaran cruise around the island. If you're feeling adventurous, don't miss the chance to swim through the sea caves at Kleftiko. It's easily one of the most unforgettable experiences on the island.

When you're ready to slow things down, wander through the charming streets of Plaka. Pop into boutiques filled with breezy linen clothing, handmade pottery, and artisan jewelry before stopping for a long lunch overlooking the sea. For those classic Greek island views, head to Klima, a tiny fishing village lined with colorful boat houses and whitewashed buildings. It feels like stepping back in time. Settle into one of the waterfront tavernas and order grilled octopus, moussaka, stuffed vine leaves, or whatever fresh catch came in that morning.

Whether you're exploring tiny chapels tucked into the coastline, wandering cobblestone streets, or stopping at a roadside fruit stand for a juicy peach on a hot afternoon, Milos is made for slow, sun-soaked days.

For this trip, I'd pack the White Geo Sandal + Amal Strap or the Ivory Twist Sandal + Amal Strap. A white sandal feels right at home against Milos' blue-and-white backdrop, pairing perfectly with breezy linens and effortless vacation outfits. Even better, they're comfortable enough to take you from winding village streets to seaside dinners without leaving your feet begging for a break.

Marrakech, Morocco

While Marrakech is certainly no hidden gem, it still feels like one of those destinations people mean to visit but never quite get around to. If you're looking for a trip that feels equal parts adventure, culture, and design inspiration, this is it.

Start your mornings at the vibrant Majorelle Garden, then make your way next door to the Yves Saint Laurent Museum, a must-visit for fashion lovers. Spend an afternoon wandering the stunning Bahia Palace before diving into the colorful maze of the Medina's souks, where getting a little lost is half the fun.

My biggest tip? Pack an empty carry-on. You'll want the extra space for handwoven Moroccan rugs, colorful pottery, woven baskets, leather goods, spices, perfumes, and natural beauty products. Trust me, you'll find far more treasures than you planned for.

If you're craving adventure, book a sunset camel ride through the Agafay Desert, where golden hills stretch for miles and the sunsets are unforgettable. When it's time to slow down, treat yourself to an argan oil massage or spend the afternoon lounging beside the serene pool of a traditional riad. It's the perfect balance to the energy of the city.

And of course, no visit is complete without indulging in the local cuisine. Sip fresh mint tea between shopping stops, then settle in for a leisurely dinner of fragrant tagine, fluffy couscous, and fresh Moroccan pastries.

With so much exploring on foot, from bustling markets to palace courtyards and hidden alleyways, you'll want shoes that are as comfortable as they are stylish. I'd pack the Denim Low Twist + Marilyn Strap for daytime adventures and the Cognac Square Sandal + Jackie Strap for evenings spent wandering the Medina. The warm, earthy tones pair perfectly with Marrakech's rich colors and desert landscapes, making them the perfect finishing touch for every outfit.

São Miguel, Azores, Portugal

Often called the "Hawaii of Europe," the Azores offer the perfect blend of dramatic coastlines, lush mountains, and charming European towns, without the crowds or the price tag. If you're looking for a destination that feels adventurous yet relaxing, São Miguel should be at the top of your list.

I recommend basing yourself in Ponta Delgada, the island's picturesque port city. Spend your mornings wandering its cobblestone streets, admiring the classic Portuguese architecture, and strolling the waterfront promenade before stopping for a leisurely coffee at one of the local cafés.

One of the things that makes the Azores so unique is its volcanic landscape. Head to the village of Furnas, where steaming geothermal springs bubble up from the earth. While you're there, don't miss the chance to try cozido das Furnas, a traditional stew that's slow-cooked underground using nothing but the natural heat from the volcano. It's one of those travel experiences you can't find anywhere else.

As you explore inland, you'll drive winding roads framed by blooming hydrangeas, rolling green hills, and grazing dairy cows. For one of the island's most iconic views, hike to the overlook at Sete Cidades, where two crater lakes sit side by side, one a brilliant emerald green and the other a deep sapphire blue. It almost doesn't look real.

The island is also full of incredible local flavors. Browse the farmers' markets for fresh cheeses, island-grown produce, and the Azores' famous sweet pineapples before settling into one of the cozy, family-owned restaurants for fresh seafood, locally raised meats, and Portuguese specialties.

Between volcanic coastlines, mountain viewpoints, and endless cobblestone streets, you'll want footwear that can keep up with every adventure. I'd pack the Cow Loafer + Grace Strap for long days exploring towns and scenic overlooks, and the White V-Mule + Marilyn Strap for seaside dinners and afternoons spent wandering Ponta Delgada. Comfortable enough for full days on your feet and polished enough for every vacation photo, they're the perfect companions for an Azores getaway.

Okinawa, Japan

If you've been dreaming of a tropical getaway but still want the incredible culture, food, and charm that Japan is known for, Okinawa is your destination. With crystal-clear water, white sand beaches, and a laid-back island lifestyle, it feels worlds away from Tokyo while still offering a uniquely Japanese experience.

Spend your mornings lounging on the powdery shores of Emerald Beach, where you'll find some of the most beautiful seashells you've ever seen. Then, head out to snorkel the famous Blue Cave, where sunlight filters through the water, creating brilliant shades of blue above vibrant coral reefs filled with tropical fish. If you're looking for a quieter escape, the island is dotted with secluded beaches that feel like your own private slice of paradise.

When you're ready to explore beyond the coast, wander the colorful streets of Naha, popping into cozy cafés, independent boutiques, and local markets. For a completely different side of Okinawa, rent a kayak or paddleboard and glide through the island's peaceful mangrove forests. It feels like stepping into another world.

And of course, the food alone is worth the trip. Don't leave without trying Okinawa soba, incredibly fresh sushi and sashimi, or grilled seafood served right along the beach as the sun begins to set.

For a destination that's equal parts tropical escape and stylish city stroll, you'll want shoes that can do both. I'd pack the Black Point Sandal + Amal Strap for days spent exploring Naha and the Black Floral Twist Sandal + Marilyn Strap for seaside dinners and sunset walks. They're effortlessly chic, comfortable enough for full days of adventure, and the perfect finishing touch to your Okinawa vacation wardrobe.
