The owner of this shoe is probably going to be found spending her free time playing something like squash. She loves the tradition, the strategy, and the excuse to wear an excellent skirt with absolutely no intention of looking sporty. But it isn't your more conventional tennis. It's still a little out of the ordinary, and that's exactly why she loves it.

What vacation are these shoes being worn on?

The owner of these shoes is going to the Azores. Is it Portugal? Yes. Is it the traditional trendy version of Portugal, like Lisbon or Porto? Absolutely not. She's wandering through quaint Portuguese fishing villages, taking photos of the beautiful hydrangeas, indulging in delicious and slightly obscure seafood, admiring the incredible Portuguese tilework throughout the towns, and, of course, fitting in plenty of hikes and thermal pool dips. Maybe she's not wearing the Indigo Croc V Mule on the hikes, but you can absolutely picture her wandering through the towns in them. They're the perfect shoe for a vacation like this, especially with that block heel. Those cobblestone streets are not for the faint of heart.

These shoes are being worn to a literary dinner party. Everyone comes dressed as themselves, the table is covered in handwritten place cards and candles, and conversation naturally turns to what everyone has been reading lately and what's currently on their “You Have to Read This” list. After dinner and dessert, the friends move into a fun presentation night, where everyone gives a presentation on a funny, niche topic. Maybe it's “Ranking Which Marvel Characters I Think I Could Defeat and Why,” or “The History of Rom-Coms.” Again, it's knowledge-based, a little nerdy, incredibly interesting, and completely authentic to the people in the room. No one is trying too hard. They're just genuinely fascinated by something and want everyone else to be fascinated too.

What piece of art best embodies the energy of this shoe?

If this shoe were a piece of art, it would have to be Henri Matisse's Blue Nudes series. Created late in Matisse's career, the works came from his cut-out technique, which he famously described as “painting with scissors.” He cut and arranged pieces of blue paper into simplified, rhythmic forms inspired in part by the human figure and by influences from African and Oceanic art. And that's exactly what feels right about this shoe. It's not necessarily something everyone will immediately understand, but once you know the story, there's so much more to appreciate. It's beautiful in its deeply considered without looking complicated, and certainly not everyone's taste. But the people who love it, really love it.

We've spent quite enough time convincing women that beauty requires pinching, blistering, uncomfortable heels.
