Harmony in Her Own Words
What's your daily or life mantra?
Progress not perfection.
Best advice you received during your career journey?
Work smarter not harder.
Heels or Flats?
Both! But more flats than heels these days.
What women in history would you invite for an intimate dinner party?
Eiko Ishioka. She's my favorite costume designer and I'm so curious what she's like as a person. She designed costumes for The Cell, Dracula, Cirque Du Soleil, and even the Olympics.
What's your guilty pleasure?
Now that I'm a new parent, free independent time is rare. Every other Monday, after the baby is asleep and my husband is playing softball, I have two hours to do whatever I want. It's like a burst of circuit training where I fit everything I'd like to do in that time. I'll usually throw on a face mask while I make myself a simple dinner and listen to a podcast. Find a random movie that looks SO BAD it's good. Watch the movie while I eat, and then work on a creative project for the rest of the time. When I know my husband's on his way back, I'll make myself a decadent spicy hot cocoa and tidy up our living space so I can hear all about his game. I used to try and catch up on chores during that time, but now its a time I cherish for myself.
Any advice for the next generation of boss ladies?
You're too young not to try. As I'm approaching 40, I keep feeling like my time to achieve certain goals has past. In reality, that's a lie we tell ourselves for various reasons. If anything, I'm learning that there's zero reason NOT to do something if it would bring deeper meaning to my life. For example, I've been telling myself it was too late to learn Japanese for the past 20 years. By now, I'd certainly be fluent. Now I'm habit stacking in 15-minute increments. You'd be amazed how far along you can get with that short daily commitment.
Let's toast to your success! Drink of Choice?
A Peanut Butter Valhrona Hot Cocoa with Soy milk.
