This month, meet Shilpa Iyengar.
Shilpa Iyengar is the founder and CEO of Alterre, a brand she launched a decade ago after meeting co-founder Harmony Richards at Parsons. Bonding over their love of travel, dark humor, and great shoes, Shilpa brought to life her vision of footwear that is sustainable, versatile, and comfortable enough for everyday wear. Their first collection debuted at New York Fashion Week in 2015.
Since then, Shilpa has grown Alterre into an award-winning brand recognized by Forbes, Oprah Daily, Brides, and Travel + Leisure, while also earning the Butterfly Mark Award for excellence in sustainability. Today, she leads Alterre from Miami, balancing her role as CEO with life as a new mom to her son Arya, alongside her husband, photographer Max.
Shilpa in Her Own Words
Best advice you received during your career journey?
“A brand takes a long time to take off, if it's working, hold on as long as you can. So I always remember running Alterre is a marathon and not a sprint. I have to have enough energy to keep it moving and not burn out.”
Heels or Flats?
“Heels obviously. I used to wear 5" heels everyday until I started Alterre. So much so, people thought I was actually tall!”
What women in history would you invite for an intimate dinner party?
“I'd love to meet some of the women that are our strap inspirations. Marie Laveau, Billie Holiday, Marilyn Monroe. All show-women who had to invent themselves. I'd ask Marilyn how she really died!”
What's your secret weapon?
“My husband Max. He's my pillar of strength, my sounding board, and the calming presence I need to keep Alterre going. He's smart, funny, a serial entrepreneur, and the best dad to our new baby Arya.”
Any advice for the next generation of boss ladies?
“Hold your head up high and keep trucking on. People will take notice and everything will fall into place. It's just a matter of time!”

“When I lived in New York it was always an Old Fashioned, but in my Miami life it's a mezcal margarita!”
