Sustainably Spooky - Last Minute Halloween Costumes

Your guide to creative, closet-made Halloween looks that don’t cost a thing!

Every fall, we get so caught up in pumpkin picking, carving, and getting the kids’ costumes ready that our own Halloween look often ends up at the very bottom of the list. As the fabulous fashionistas we are, it feels almost like defeat to throw on a witches’ hat or stick to basic orange and black. Instead of racing to Party City for last-minute Halloween gear, we’ve rounded up easy, throw-together costumes you can pull from your own closet, perfect for cocktail parties or festive nights out! The best part? Re-purposing your wardrobe not only saves you money, it’s also a small win for the planet. Here at Alterre, we keep it spooky, sustainable, and simple!

Last-Minute Spooky Looks

Final-hour Frida Fit

If you’re anything like us, you’re a feminist at heart who loves making a statement all year long. Frida Kahlo is the perfect icon to channel! Her signature style is instantly recognizable and, thankfully, you can pull it off with pieces you probably already have in your closet. Think a colorful dress or skirt, floral hair accessories with your hair up, bold earrings, and don’t forget her iconic brow. It’s a stylish homage that keeps you festive without a last-minute trip for a flimsy Halloween headband that won’t survive the office party.

Green Goddess

Got a white, flowy dress from this past summer’s vacation? Picture it with us: add a white shawl if it’s still a little chilly, layer on some gold jewelry and accessories, swipe on glowy makeup, and slip into your favorite gold heels (we love The Golden Platform with the Marilyn Strap). Extra credit if you channel a specific god or goddess! Dionysus with a bottle of wine is always a playful choice, after all, he is the god of wine and festivities. Going green while glowing gold has never looked so easy!

Make-Do Moira Rose

If you loved Schitt’s Creek as much as we did, this is the easiest yet most stylish costume for you! Grab all those over-the-top dramatic pieces you’ve been saving for a “special occasion”, but stick to black and white. Think furs, sequins, leathers, the more dramatic, the better. Pair your look with oversized sunglasses that cover half your face, a bold red lip, and the Moira accent you’ve been practicing for the past ten minutes. The perfect last-minute Moira Rose costume to wow all your friends!

Rushed Ruth Bader Ginesburg

Ladies, here’s one that’s super easy but still makes a statement. Grab a black dress, a lace or doily collar, some glasses, and pull your hair into a low bun. If you happen to have a gavel or a law book lying around, great! If not, no stress. Honestly, with this last-minute look, you’re not just dressed up for Halloween, you’re channeling an icon. Fashionable. Festive. Feminist.

Cable-knit Cactus

Some of us have a green sweater or hoodie tucked away in the back of the closet, the one we bought because the sales associate promised it made our eyes pop. Well, now it’s time for it to shine! Using that sweater and a few simple materials like yarn, pipe cleaners, or twine, you can turn it into cactus spines. If it’s a cable-knit sweater, even better, just thread the spines through the knit and tie them off. Add a floral head accessory and brown boots to represent the pot, and voilà: a chic, posh prickly pear costume ready in just five minutes!
